About Our Tours

As we build our inventory of historical and religious travel throughout Europe and other global destinations, we will first focus on the marvelous historical destinations found in Spain, which has a rich history going back to the early times of the Roman Empire. In particular, we will place special emphasis on our signature tour: The Steps of St. Paul in Spain: Discover the Importance of Spain in the Evolution of Christianity. This will be an exciting tour that will take participants through some of the most important historical cities of the Roman Empire’s presence in Spain, while at the same time focusing on the immense influence Spain had in the evolution of Christianity.

It should be noted that adding to Spain’s rich history in the evolution of Christianity is the fact that the other two religions descending from the first Patriarch Abraham – Judaism and Islam – have also had an important presence in Spain. This is especially true of early Judaism communities and later early Christian communities, which had favorable conditions for their establishment in Hispania, as Spain was known in Roman times. Our signature tour will cover the presence of these three religions in Hispania and how Christianity eventually became the main religion for the region.

Given that early Christianity evolved during the Roman Empire, it should be noted that Hispania was composed of three Roman provinces – Baetica, Tarraconensis, and Lusitania. The Baetica region in particular, today’s Andalucía, was one of the areas with the largest growth of Christian communities by the year 300 AD.

Part of the reason for the early growth of these communities is the fact that Roman persecutions in the early years were much more brutal in Rome, where the Christians were being thrown to the lions. Although there were persecutions in Hispania, the Roman governors of its three provinces were much more focused on maintaining a strong system of trade and commerce with Rome, and this allowed for Christian communities to flourish.

Many biblical historians agree that there must have been an early presence in Hispania of either one of the apostles of Jesus Christ, or a group of direct disciples of the apostles, that spread the Word of Jesus in this region. It is important to note that by the year 300 AD there already were 37 Christian communities with bishops and presbyters leading these communities, considered to be one of the highest density of Christians in any region of the then known world. This would indicate that the founder, or founders, of Christianity in Hispania were recognized as having a significant level of authority and commitment to spread the Word of Jesus.

This is where the presence of the Apostle Paul in Hispania comes in. Recent studies by biblical historians have strongly endorsed the likelihood that the last missionary trip Paul took was to Hispania. We know he had a very deep commitment to preach in Hispania, and indeed, after he was freed from his two years in prison in Rome, we have little direct documentation of where Paul went. There is, however, a significant amount of indirect and anecdotal evidence from the writings of early Church Fathers that Paul did travel to Hispania. Unfortunately, he never had the chance to write a letter (epistle) to the Hispaniards because he was executed shortly after returning to Rome.
